I came up with a new way to show who the greatest of the greatest are at AOA. It’s a way to show off how involved you.

It’s called AOA Points.

AOA Points is a really simple system that ranks AOA Members (747 and AviatorPro currently) who comment, login, etc on the blog. This is all automatically taken care of.

So, why should you care?

  1. Exclusive Prizes will be given to top members on a regular basis.
  2. It gives us all an extra reason to get more involved.
  3. It shows off our ‘status’.
  4. You get ranked. Currently you start out as a Student Aviator, and then you can work up to a Private Aviator.

How does one go about earning points?

Here are some requirements.

  1. You must be logged into a members area (747 or AviatorPro)
  2. You can get points for ALL posts, protected or not.

How can you earn points?

  1. Login (5 Points)
  2. Comment (10 Points)
  3. Share on Facebook or Twitter (25 points for each share)
  4. Post information about us on your blog or website (a simple link) (50 Points)

1 and 2 are automatic. To get points for Twitter, simply include #flyaoamedia in your tweet when you retweet, and also #(your username).

For Facebook, just shoot me a quick line through email and I’ll give you the points.

We are going to play around with this whole AOA Points thing and see how it goes. It’s most likely here to stay, because I think it’ll be a lot of fun to give recognition to the top Aviators. We will tweak things along the way, have contests, give aways, and a lot of fun!

That’s it for me!

Throttle On!

PS
Comment and let me know what you think about this and also some other ideas on how we can award points. (AND EARN POINTS FOR IT!)

No bad idea at all. But you have to be careful that our blog posts don’t get eroded by flooding with useless stuff just for the sake of earning points. I highly appreciate the infos shared here and don’t want to see them degenerate.

Concerning Twitter, Facebook or other public places I have to admit that I don’t participate there. Bare in mind that flightsimming mostly is a hobby for the older ones among us… *oops* And although I’m not that old (in fact I’m 42) I haven’t understood spirit and purpose of twittering and facebooking yet. Perhaps I’m oldfashioned enough to care for my real life social contacts rather than developing virtual ones…

Don’t get me wrong: I don’t criticize anyone using those virtual platforms. I think it’s a great means of communicating without borders and beyond time zones. But it’s not completely mine…

    Cheers, Christian

      I agree with you, Christian…!

I’m on Facebook, but ONLY to see what my grandson and his girlfriend are talking about…!

      • Christian Fuerst

        LOL
And did you get a valuable insight yet, Albert? ;-)
Perhaps I should register on Facebook when my children are old enough. But that’s still some months or years to go.

      Hey Christian,
I think Facebook and Twitter for a brand like AOA has to be done correctly. I’m sure you guys don’t want to know when I’m brushing my teach, taking a shower, going to a movie etc. I try to add valuable content to everything I do and so it has an actual purpose rather than just a time suck.

      Hope that makes sense.

Tend to agree, we could all post a load of rubbish on here (as I’m doing now), and get points for it.
The admin to decide what is a worthy post will be too much, and could be very objective, so that’s out, so not sure whatt’s the best way to go with this.

Anyways, I’m learning loads, so Thottle On!

Or perhaps build into the system a way for other users to rank comments and only those comments with a certain ranking get points. That would eliminate useless posts.

    • http://www.flyaoamedia.com/ Chris Palmer

We will watch out for the useless points thing. I’ll update the post to reflect that you could get damaging marks (points deducted) for commenting like spam.

I’m not saying you can’t give a big ‘high-five’ or something, but if I see someone just rapid fire adding post comments, I’ll delete the comments and subtract some points.

Now, this is only one of those situations where someone is putting something like, “Good job, I liked this post” and then just pasted a ton of times rapid fire.

But if you go in and say something that’s actually cool and useful or even if it’s just a unique compliment, I’m cool with that.

I follow Aviator Pro very close and learn very mutch from the lessons AND the comments. But I don’t post comments so offen because my english writing is not very good (reading is no problem).
I hope now not to read to mutch rubbish because then …. I have to cut off .

Making points is not my interesting thing, it is AVIATION !
Keep it in mind Chris, because you make a great job !!!

There won’t be rubbish, no worries. It’s just a way to get more people involved.

      Look at it this way….

There are a lot more people in the background right now that are viewing this stuff but not commenting. Maybe they have something really useful to share with all of us and this is all they need to say, ‘Yeah, I should comment’.

We’ll watch out and make sure people don’t abuse it.

The nice this is that I comment on every comment so that means that I’ll see what’s going on.

Regardless of all the work and I’m trying to offload right now, like web design and stuff, commenting is one thing I will always do.

A good way of spreading the word about AOA (facebook/twitter) I am sure (hope) that we do not have to hear about how many sugars you have just had in your coffee. Suck it & see. If it doesn’t work just file it under “BIN”

    • http://www.flyaoamedia.com/ Chris Palmer

Since I don’t drink coffee, you won’t be hearing about sugars ;)

I offer relevant news and the occasional laugh or article through those channels. Nothing about how my day is going. It’s almost ALWAYS relevant.

    Hi Chris,

I linked to “Angle of Attack” on my Website ( http://users.telenet.be/avt/My%20Website/ ) but no 50 points added…
    No big deal, though…! Just curious… ;-) )

Thanks man! The points have been broken. I’ll see if it’ll work.
