Read Time= 2 minutes

As I’m writing this, it’s about an hour until the first flight of the much anticipated 787. The last time Boeing launched a new aircraft, the 777, I was too young to really care. This time it is a whole new story! I’ve been waiting for this moment for years!

The 787 brings a lot of new and intriguing technologies to the table. First, it’ll have the best avionics to date, rivaled only by the Gulfstream stuff, which isn’t a surprise. Another thing is, it doesn’t use an engine-bleed air system. All electric. It also promises much more, much of which are related to passenger comfort.

The development of the 787 has been a public relations headache for Boeing, to say the least. The 787 was supposed to fly over 2 years ago, and didn’t for a number of reasons. Although it may be slightly sad to have not seen this thing in the air already, it’s just the nature of the beast.

Now let’s talk about Flight Sim.

How long have some of us waited for much anticipated FS aircraft and other addons? At times, we are promised certain things years in advance. Near the end of the production, some things start to happen. Customers get impatient, companies get defensive, more delays occur, and everyone gets to standby and wait.

Think back and remember the last addon that you were way excited about. Having known about it years in advance, was it worth it when you finally got that thing in your sim? Speaking for myself, I am generally pleased when it comes to much anticipated addons.

The reason why addons that take a long time to get released (produced) are generally top notch is the fact that whatever team is behind these products is dedicated to quality, and not just making a buck. This is really important. I’d rather have a full quality product in 2 or 3 years, than a half quality product in 1 year. Maybe that’s just me.

Because the companies producing these things are so dedicated to quality, it takes time. When something comes up, it’s fixed. When an unforeseen obstacle in the road comes up, they figure out how to get around it.

Anyone can make an addon for flight sim. Get some training in 3D or textures, read the SDK, and go at it. However, notice how there are few flightsim companies that really set themselves apart.

In Flight Sim, this is the way it is. I always remember that quality takes time, and that it’ll be worth it in the end. FS Developers aren’t the enemy in my eyes. Fate is the enemy, and one that can’t be simply brushed aside. Just ask Murphy.

Boeing has done nothing more than ensure the safety of their aircraft, and also the longevity of their shareholders. Most of all, it takes a lot of work to implement the new technologies and production structure that they have been doing. What will the end result be?

By the time you read this article, you will know.

Question: Where were you and what were you doing when you saw the 787 fly for the first time? Did it remind you of the first time you flew your favorite FS addon for the first time?

Ah, nice segue from “real world” to sim! As a developer, it seems my biggest enemy is distraction. I might launch into a project all afire to knock it out and release it, but then life sets in. My “day job” customer want more of my time, my other pursuits butt in, and the next thing I know, I’m off schedule. The only sure thing, it seems, is that there are no sure things in life.

On the subject of the 787, I know I’ll remember just where I was… glued to my computer screen, watching the live webcast while simultaneously tweeting every twitch and rumble from the big beast. It was really inspiring to see it finally take to the skies.

We had a great chat on the Facebook Fan page. It brought me chills!

It’s been a long time coming!

Thanks for sharing some of your personal views from a developers perspective.

“I always remember that quality takes time, and that it’ll be worth it in the end.” Great blog writing Captain Chris! Speaking of quality, I think you’re right. Quality is worth waiting for. The 787 is gorgeous! :) the Addons look sweet too. Have more fun!

I have to agree about the problems with customer anticipation. There’s definitely some good reasons behind Level D avoiding commenting much on their 757, and I don’t think people realize how much time it takes to create a true quality product; the rush to get things out has plagued the entertainment industry for quite a while, and while I don’t think the flight simulation industry is the same kind of “entertainment” as a first person shooter or a movie, companies have skimped on quality in order to get their products ready for some magical release date in many industries.

In the end, while the 787 delays were unfortunate, I’m sure they were necessary. While a company like Boeing is certainly required to keep their shareholders up to date on progress, and this can certainly lead to disappointment, people have to remember how incredibly complex this new airliner (and airliners in general) are.

The first time I saw the 787 fly was through Boeing’s live stream. Watching her fly was quite thrilling, and it does remind me of spooling up the engines of the Level D 767 for the first time.

At any rate, thank you for a very thought-provoking article.

Thanks for the great reply, Jon!

Developers deserve more credit than they get. However, there are a lot of developers out there producing low quality products as well, which can be scary. Although people that actually refuse to release on ‘X’ date probably have great quality products, there’s something in the back of someones mind that says, ‘What if I wait so long and it’s not that great?’. I guess the lesson is that we all just need to trust the process.

One thing that’s really been on my mind about the 787 flight was the fact that these years of preparation all came to a pinnacle at that moment. It took a serious amount of energy, human quality and creation to get that project to that point. It’s an incredible example of capitalism, project management, and business in general.

I can’t wait to see a high quality addon for this thing in Flight Simulator! I’m more passionate about this plane than I have been about any other. The only one that comes CLOSE is the 777, and there really isn’t a great addon for that out there.

Again, thanks for the awesome comment.
