One of the greatest ways to get really familiar with an aircraft is to go and get lost in the clouds.
I know it sounds simple, but there is some real technique required to fly in instrument conditions.
But, who cares. Beyond that, popping in and out of cloud layers (assuming they aren’t thunderstorms) is the most beautiful flying you’ll ever do.
Yes, I know we’re just flight simmers, but these white vistas of weightless mass are also inspiring on our monitors.
Don’t take my word for it.
Next flight, load up a slow airplane (piper cub/172/ultralight) and go buzz through a the tops of cloud layers.
Don’t plan. Don’t even bother loading up your screenshot program. Forget that it’s challenging to fly in clouds. Do it for the shear inspiring visual experience of it all. Just take it in.
Just do it for the joy of flight. Your passion.

I really appreciate your enthusiasm for instrument navigated flight.
Come out this spring and join us in an event that will celebrate the early methods of air-nav.
Last year was the first of what will be a standard platform for at least one event per year at:http://forums.flightsim.com/vbfs/forumdisplay.php?f=10
If you think you might be interested let me know and I will invite you to help me set the next one up.
Here’s the thread for the first:http://forums.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?t=200850
